The retention of competent nursing staff is a major focus of the Saint Francis Hospital Department of Nursing and the Human Resources Department. The availability of a Clinical Advancement Ladder for both Registered Professional Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses is one approach to meet this goal. This program is centered around Patricia Benners' Novice to Expert practice model. The adaptation of this model describes the advancement of nurses through five levels based on criteria for experience, professional practice, knowledge/proficiency skills and interpersonal relationships.
The objectives relating to the Clinical Advancement Ladder include:
· To provide an advancement choice that encourages nurses to continue to render care at the bedside
- To provide a system for reward and recognition for Registered Professional Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses.
- To recognize, motivate, and utilize nurses appropriately who are educationally prepared for different levels of performance.
- To differentiate between different levels of nursing competence.
- To promote the improvement for quality patient care.
